WOW! Awesome Troy! He's such a fantastic piece. You've really become a master of this craft.

Congrats on another excellent piece.

Very cool.

Kinda reminds me of the Ancient Aliens show I watched last week on the History channel.

I've got to get there next year and meet the Frazettas of sculpting in person! I'm so bummed I couldn't get there this year.

Alfred,

These interviews are awesome! Thank you for taking the time and effort to arrange them, and post them for the rest of us.

I was feeling a bit down in inspiration this week, but now I'm pumped again. I haven't seen posts from Tony "Popeye" Cipriano and Troyboy in a looooooooong time, so it's refreshing to hear from them again.

Keep that blog going amigo!

Dang! I step away for a few weeks and everybody fricken dies. This bloody stinks.

First Frazetta (replaced now in 3D by the Brothers Shiflett), and today, Dio. My childhood is truly gone. :(

BTW - I'm down for some Frazetta tribute sculpting.

Troy,

I was just watching "Troy" the other day! This is a fantastic likeness. Excellent work.

Any idea when the figure will be available?

Oh man J! These are fricken great! That's what I love about your work, it not only has really cool subjects with a ton of gnarly details, but they're done with a flair and character that sets them apart. The three giants that you have on the other thread remind me of studies for Rodin.

Thank you so much for the great inspiration!

Wow! Now that guy has an obsession.

Do you think he's got toilet paper with members of the Rebel Alliance on it?

Jeff,

I liked the gritiness -- I just didn't like the lame way they tried to tie the whole thing together in the end. It became glaringly obvious that they had developed plot lines and mysteries that were strictly for shock value but they didn't have a clue what they meant or how they would affect the show.

If you want character development, go rent the Babylon 5 series to see how a real Sci-Fi mini-series should be made. They did a GREAT job with character development and it wasn't based on gratuitous sex scenes. Babylon 5 was also done with the end in mind from the start. The writer knew what was going to happen in each season and how it tied into the end, before they started shooting Season 1. That's the way you make a mini-series.

BSG had its moments of genius, such as Dee's decision to blow her brains out after a great night or the Rebellion aboard Galactica. Each of the Seasons had a couple real mind-blowing episodes. You'll get no argument from me there.

BSG TNA was a potentially great series wrapped in a cheap suit of contrived plots, cop-outs and TNA (oh, excuse me, that lustful blonde who used to bang Baltar in his mind in Season 1, was actually some sort of Angel).

BTW -- You said they had retro tech so the Cylons wouldn't tap into their systems??? That didn't work out too well now did it. Considering all the new Vipers they had fell prey to the Cylons over-riding their systems. I think the retro tech was simply that, it was old and meant to be moth-balled. It wasn't purposely made to be something the Cylons couldn't tap into. If it were, then why make the new Vipers with vulnerable technology???

Oh, just so you know...I actually loved everything about Season 1 and had high hopes for the other seasons.

Forgive my whining, but I have to ramble a bit here.

BSG was a four year soap opera in space with some nice fight scenes and adventure thrown in.

Come on folks. Let’s get a bit critical here. These guys can fly around in space ships that can “jump” using hyperdrives to take them light years in an instant, yet still use machine guns and lame intercom systems??? Heck, all in all we’re more advanced. I felt at times I was watching CSI or some other modern day show. I thought this was Sci-Fi.
I’m not saying they should have gone Star Trek TNG or something on us, but at least try to stay true to the universe they are creating. There was so much BS that didn’t make any sense, that at times it was altogether painful to watch.

So, why did I? I like spaceships and evil robots bent on the destruction of man set against man’s stubborn will to survive and rebuild.

The writers took an old series and tried to revamp it for a modern audience, but in the process of showing us the weakness of humanity (lust, greed, cowardice, betrayal, etc…), failed to really show us the strengths of humanity. By the end of season 2, I was kinda hoping the Cylons would wipe humanity out. But then even they got whiney, low and despicable.

I honestly stayed on watching, because I was waiting for the writers to redeem themselves - To give us something worthy of our years of watching. However, I forgot for a moment that it was a night time soap opera. i.e. Who’s fracking who this week. Gimme a break.

When they re-envisioned Star Trek, they had The New Generation (TNG), which was a good show. However, with Battle Star Galactica they should have called it BSG-TNA.

And let’s face it, how many soap operas really know how to end? They don’t, that’s why All My Children and the rest are still on TV. They can’t figure a way to wrap it all up.

I guess I was expecting a great wrap up like Babylon 5, but instead I got Dallas.

For those who liked it, good for you. I’m happy for you. I for one, won’t be wasting my time on the spin offs they done.

Wasn't there a "flaming dungheap" scene in 300?

Oops. My mistake, that was the heap of dead Persians.

Off Topic » The Lost art of the Mixed Tape Feb 26, 2009 11:03 AM (Total replies: 4)

Alfred -- I remember those days too well. Of course, I think it's important to remember, that back then, sending a note to a friend required (usually) pen, paper, envelopes and stamps.

Yes, it was a longer process, but I think if we had access to click and arrange stuff back then, we would have used it and loved it.

Of course, it's hard to create fade-ins and stuff with i-pods and even CDs.

BTW -- It sounds like you were Mr. Romantic dude with the mixed tape for your gal. Bravo.

Back then all my mixes were Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and the like. Not really to the liking of the ladies. Of course, even now, my wife hears my music and cringes. I guess some things never change.

Alfred,

I just happened to catch this over at DA this morning and thought WOW! You really hit this one out of the park.

She really came out beautifully...Stunningly so.

So, any further plans for this one????

Dude!!!! You've got some bad a$$ work. I can totally see the Bros influence on your style. As for Wolvies' arm - yeah...it's a bit short, but it's still kick a$$.

You officially have a fan.

Holy Crap Troy!!!! What a fantastic job you did on him. I sincerely hope Randy sees this and picks it up.

The workmanship on this guy is really top notch. It seems like a departure in style from your usual work (which btw is always fantastic) and really seems tailored to the Bowen stable of figures. i.e. It would be hard to guess in looking at it, which of the master sculptors working for Randy sculpted this. Of course, once one knows it was you, you can make out some of your trademark style.

Excellent, Excellent work!

Will

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!!!

Sorry...had to get that out of my system.

Yes B - one of the all time coolest villains ever. If it wasn't for his outstanding work in The Wrath of Khan, the Star Trek movie series would have died.

RIP Khan

I disagree with the comment regarding people with super powers being part of this "new" vision for Batman. Raj al Gul from Batman Begins was immortal - isn't that a super power?

Just like the Joker was reinvisioned, I sincerely believe characters like Mr. Freeze can be reinvisioned as well. Especially considering most of what Freeze did was technology based. Let's also not forget the Penguin of the comics was not a mutant freak like he was in the Keaton Batman film, but rather a ruthless business man style crook.

Of course it does seem that from previous interviews with Nolan, that the Penguin and Catwoman may not make appearances. It may be that he intended, at least initially, to stay away from some of the mainstream villains that had already made campy appearances. The only problem is, if you're going to continue the run of films, eventually you have to include them. The trick is in how they are reinvented to fit his new vision.

RE: Rourke -- Has anyone caught him in that movie "The Wrestler"? I hear it's supposed to be pretty good.

Yeah, the Slowskis are a crack up. So many good ones.

Then again...I'm easily ammused.
